YO GOP: 6 Takeaways From Alberta’s Referendum That Should MATTER To You

Alberta is as different from Eastern Canada as Texas is from New York or Massachusetts. Maybe more. If GOP leadership is smart, they’re taking notes from the lessons learned.

Keep scrolling to the end. The last takeaway brings us well outside of the usual conversation about solving America’s political problems. And it might be the only one that can break through leftist logjams opposing positive reform.

Albertans took a vote this week with ten questions on the ballot. The one the press LIKES to talk about is Question Ten, “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada”, because they got the result they wanted.

The results of OTHER questions might make Dems and their complicit Press-titutes in the US just as uncomfortable as they do their Canadian counterparts.

Questions six through nine are only relevant in the context of the Canadian form of government which they more or less inherited from the British system, with a few tweaks. The others can be particularly relevant to the American context, especially as States like California and New York are actively fighting to keep illegal aliens on the voter rolls.

Here’s the source from which I’m pulling the numbers I’m citing:

Alberta overwhelmingly votes to remain as apart of Canada.

But also, they voted Yes to Eight of the Nine.

I hope the PM @MarkJCarney can respect democracy even when it maybe unfavorable to him. https://t.co/C1I39om2vK

Keep in mind, Canadians have been grappling with the same unfettered immigration America saw under Biden, except that they have a much greater number of immigrants per population, with a high-profile advocates of ‘Century Initiative‘ demanding that Canada’s population (a total that went from 30.7 Million in 2000, to 35.7 Million in 2015 and now is fast approaching 42 Million!), and many of the attendant problems of trying to integrate people from divergent parts of the world with vastly different customs, values, and priorities.

Canada has no ‘Federalist’ checks and balances of any kind. What the Federal government says, goes across the country, even if the demand is repugnant to voters from one region or another of the country. Not surprisingly, in Canada, that math almost always skews in favor of the Canadian center/left, which on most days lands you somewhere left of a typical Democrat policy.

Imagine living in Texas of Florida and having your local laws and customs set by Newsom or Hochul and you’re getting the idea. In fact, most of the Constitutional questions, if boiled down, are directly related to a very familiar complaint: ‘taxation without representation’. In short, they’re getting fleeced by Canada, with very little to show for it. And they know it. (Which probably explains why #9, in support of a more Federalist approach to Canadian governance passed cleanly.)

Which brings us to the five questions that ARE relevant to American politics. It’s a little late in the game for it to impact midterms, but if we’re paying attention to what ordinary people there are upset about, it might get us thinking about how those same issues affect us here:

Let’s start with the questions, which ALL focus on the question of immigration:

Since it’s all written in boilerplate lawyer-speak, I’ll simplify the questions:

1) Should Alberta pump the brakes on immigration so that Albertans can get first access to the job market, limiting immigration to genuine areas of unmet employment needs?

2) Should access to government programs (health care, education and the like) be limited to people who have a valid status in the country — citizen, permanent resident or similar established immigration status that has been affirmed by the Albertan provincial government?

3) If current rules for access to government programs continue, should there be a 12 month waiting period for new arrivals to the province before they receive any provincially-funded financial support?

4) If current rules for programs remain unchanged, should foreigners with a non-permanent immigration status be expected to pay a surcharge for the use of Education, healthcare etc for themselves and their family?

5) Should proof of citizenship be required to participate in an election?

The drumroll, please:

Every one of those five questions won a majority — even in CANADA!

If even Canadians support those ideas, what do you thing their support would look like among America’s far more centre-right electorate?

Especially when you single out proof of citizenship, residency, or some sort of a safeguard permitting States to enforce immigration law when Biden, and others like him abandon their sworn duties to uphold any parts of the law they don’t like.

Even if Schumer (or whoever eventually replaces him) CONTINUES to block attempts at passing legislation that would establish these no-brainer expectations, the GOP can turn their energy to a solution we’ve NOT yet tried.

Here’s a sixth idea to chew on.

The Convention of States.

There are any number of no-brainer provisions — like proof of citizenship for voting, or provisions to block court-packing, or requiring a national vote before any new territory can be granted statehood — that would get broad support, and if we can enter them as Amendments, even the most cynical subversive DSA agenda can’t remake America into something unrecognizable.

You could even put in provisions requiring balanced budgets and debt repayment so the hole we are in stops getting bigger.
