Have you got someone who hates you? Good. It means you’re making a difference in the world.
It’s a little like the way vinegar and water look the same, until the second you pour them on baking soda. Suddenly there’s no doubting which is which.
Plenty of people go through life trying to be as ‘unreactive’ as possible. The personality of distilled water.
That’s NOT what God’s people are called to. Jesus called us salt and light. Agents of change. And the interesting thing about agents of change? They interact with a world that wants to keep the status quo.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking opposition and difficulty in life is the evidence of being out of God’s favor. (William Carey, among a long line of other faithful Christianss like him, would have something to say about that.)
In fact, if you haven’t faced any real opposition, it probably means you haven’t yet seen any meaningful spiritual growth. Or haven’t you noticed yet that God has a habit of allowing us sparring partners that make us better than we’d be without them? Even Jesus himself went through it at the launch of his ministry. And the church’s best historical growth spurts? They gave us Tertullian’s famous phrase: The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.
But maybe you’re the special one that doesn’t need that kind of oppositional growth incentive… right?
Yeah. Sure. And maybe we’ve got a bridge to sell ya.
