It takes some kind of guts to stand up against the lobby groups on whose money and influence your party depends. But when an issue burns brightly enough, you’ll do it come what may.
For one Louisiana Democrat, that issue was a school system that has been dooming generation after generation of children to limited futures because they haven’t delivered on the most basic promises of reading and math skills.
For folks on both sides of the aisle in Louisiana, politicians have decided that enough is enough. Enough Democrats broke ranks with their School Unions benefactors that a school choice bill was passed with a supermajority. It now proceeds to the state senate for a vote there.
But in the spirit of ‘catching someone doing something good’, and recognizing the good kind of bipartianship, instead of the odious uniparty nonsense we normally have to report on, the impassioned appeal of Rep Jason Hughes is a breath of fresh air.
He’s not willing to sell his soul over a gig that nets him a few grand a year… especially when the futures of another generation children are riding on him doing the right thing.

If he can populate his party with more people like him, we might find ourselves back on solid footing where two sane parties keep each other honest.
Because that is the kind of political tension that actually makes the country stronger… instead of the captured-by-donor political activist class nonsense that doesn’t give a damn about who these policies hurt in the long run.
