The Bernie Bro socialist set love to make big promises about ‘free medicare for all’, but love to hide the facts about what it REALLY looks like in places they already have it.
Canada, for instance.
Canucks don’t get a bill for typical hospital visits. But that doesn’t mean they don’t pay in other ways. Because the procedures and diagnostic tools still need to be provided for, the equipment needs to be supplied, and the layers upon layers of hospital staff still need to get paid. It all adds up, and even governments eventually run out of money.
Rather than refusing service, which would go over like a lead balloon, governments control costs in other ways. Limiting diagnostic machines, would be one example.

(Or they can drive over the border and get one within 24 hours, if they pay for their own.) Why the difference? Simple: there are 10 machines for every Million Canadians, and 40 machines for every million Americans. If you really want to hit the ‘free health care’ crowd with an uncomfortable truth, have them compare those waiting times with Veterinary MRI’s, even in Canada. Why the difference? Customers pay for the veterinary ones. Government pays for the human ones.
Another way thy control costs is by having you jump through dozens of hoops of consultation before a treatment is approved. In the case of Jess Grossman, (age; 36) even the life-saving cancer surgery that was ordered by the surgeon did NOT go proceed. The reasons are horrifying, and baked right into the Canadian system.
The extra steps with weeks of waiting while treatments were on hold just cost Jess Grossman the window of opportunity for surgery that may have let her beat a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. Here it is in her own words:

This actually opens up another massive difference between Canada-style Government-paid and US-based right-to-try user-directed options.
In Canada, plenty of medical services are NOT covered. (You’ll notice they are not rationed, like paid medical services, either.)
Most notably, the public health system does not cover prescriptions, dental care and vision care. Also omitted are ambulance fees, long-term care, emergency medical while you are out of the country, psychological counselling/therapy and services provided by registered specialists such as massage therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic and so on. — Manulife
There are almost endless stories featuring a Canadian who exhausts the ability/willingness of the Canadian system to treat some serious illness. What do they do when that happens?
Sadly, some will give up, roll over and die. The Canadian government will gladly fund the full cost of Medical Assistance in Dying because hey — when you’re dead you no longer cost the government anything to look after! And if you have an estate, the Government gets to cash in on those taxes!
For those Canucks stubbornly intent on remaining alive, they tend to cross that US border and find a hospital with cutting-edge equipment, a place where the patient decides whether to incur the costs of an expensive procedure if it means adding a few years (or some quality of life) before they clock out of life on terra firma.
In other words, the last, best hope of Canadians with an urgent medical crisis is using the American system they love to condemn. If state run systems were capable of making something better than what America has, they’d have done so already.
