The pandemic wasn’t the only example of suffering kids being a distant second, third, or twelfth consideration after some more immediate political advantage. But it’s a very visible one.
And it’s never the folks with money that pay any real price in the final analysis. It’s always the barely-getting-by working poor that take such decisions on the chin. The ones that can’t afford to move to a better school district, or pay for little junior to get private options where literacy is an expected result.
We’ve got whole cities where lawmakers bend over backward to please demands of the teachers’ unions, without any meaningful accountability structure where teachers have an ‘or else’ attached to their students actually learning something — like the functional use of numbers and letters — while paid to instruct them.
And when those unfortunate students finally encounter a teacher who genuinely cares about the future prospects of those students, it’s so late in the game there’s precious little he can do to steer them away from disaster. How bad is it?
Here’s the video of a teacher that has gone viral. Darius Williams is lamenting the sad state of the new Senior class he is teaching. He broke down in class over it.
Here’s the amazing thing about it. This is his very first stint at teaching. He took the job after a successful career as a chef, because he wanted to be a positive force for good, and he saw that the kids were not being set up for success, and he wanted to be a difference maker. What he saw in his first few days absolutely floored him.

That’s the picture of a good man who cares deeply about the future of his kids.
And what is he up against? The good man who cares about whether students can read or write is up against people like this who see education as a camp where they can be force-fed ideologies that will further their revolutionary goals:

They’re being radicalized and taught how to be political activists. Because priorities.

Before schools could be reopened after COVID, the teacher’s union in Cali had some demands. Demands that included securing an absolute monopoly on childhood education by ending the parental control over education options that charter schools affords to parents. They also insisted on defunding of police, and a wealth tax among other demands.
And remember when the Biden administration got busted for writing School Shutdown policy that was supposedly following scientific protocols, but in reality was taken almost word-for-word from what the Teachers’ Union requested the WH policy to be by email? What an interesting coincidence.
Do you suppose a single one of these shut the schools until the political blackmail has been met gave so much as a tinker’s damn for whether the kids suffered learning loss, or even knew which end of a pencil to hold?
The answer to that question is pretty obvious. Is it any wonder that so many parents want to see school choice for kids? If nothing else, it breaks the monopoly, and makes them take seriously the educational needs of the kids they have been betraying for — in some cases — generations.
